Non-Surgical Face Lift Procedures

If you'd like to look younger but don't want the expense, risk or downtime of conventional plastic surgery, new noninvasive approaches may be just what you're looking for. Less expensive than surgical treatment, these approaches tighten skin with the use of radio waves, infrared light or electricity. They don't require general anesthesia and recovery time is minimal.

Thermage

    Thermage uses radio frequency energy to heats collagen, which causes it to tighten and encourages the production of new collagen. It can be used for all skin types to tighten the jaw line, jowls, forehead and lessen the appearance of mandolin lines around the mouth.

    A technician rubs a small wand back and forth across the skin. The wand emits pulses of energy. During the treatment you may feel nothing, mild warmth or pain. Jean Loftis, a plastic surgeon in Cincinnati, Ohio, the higher the treatment setting, the better the results. But a higher frequency increases the chance of pain, so she uses a local anesthetic during Thermage treatments.

    Treatment lasts 2 to 3 hours and mild swelling may be present for up to 7 days. While some people see results right away, the best results appear after 2 to 3 months and may continue to improve for up to 6 months. If you don't see any improvement after 6 months, a second treatment may be needed. Thermage has only been around since 2000, so no one knows yet how long the benefit of treatment will last.

    Possible side effects from Thermage include burns and scarring, skin discoloration and pain.

    The costs of Thermage varies with the number of areas treated. In 2009 the cost of a full face treatment was in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.

Titan

    The Titan laser also heats collagen, but uses infrared light to do so. According to its manufacturer, the Titan heats more uniformly than the Thermage technology, lessening the change of dimpling or pitting from uneven application. There is less pain with Titan, though you may want to take a mild pain reliever before treatment. As with Thermage, you may feel a warm or tingling sensation with Titan, or a sensation akin to being stung by ants. The treatment takes about an hour.

    As with Thermage, results appear over a period of time as the collagen heals and new collagen forms. The best results are obtained 2 to 6 months from the first treatment. A second treatment may be needed.

    Risks of Titan include scarring, discoloration of the skin and temporary redness. The cost of Titan in 2009 ranged from $1,500 to $2,500 per session.

Bio-Ultimate Face Lift

    The Bio-Ultimate Face Lift uses low level electric current applied to skin. The procedures improve muscle tone and enhances collagen production. A series of 12 treatments are recommended, each lasting about an hour. Maintenance treatments are also needed. In 2009, the average cost of each session was $100. Results from the Bio Ultimate can appear right away and improves over time with additional treatments.

    These non-invasive procedures are not a substitute for a surgical face lift. They work best on those who are showing the first signs of aging and sagging.

How to Make Your Own Collagen Facial

An effective collagen facial must help your skin make and eventually contain more of its own collagen. Although pure liquid collagen (a substance made by animals) can be purchased and put on onto the skin, the delivery system may not be as effective as creating a collagen facial with ingredients proven to make your skin make more of its own collagen. Here's a simple collagen facial with proven collagen boosting ingredients that's natural and easy, using fresh, green, inexpensive ingredients available year-round.

It's recently been reported that the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and a French research team have found serious benefits for the skin in avocados. Certain avocado sugars including D-manno-heptulose boost epidermis collagen. As well, vitamin C is also proven to produce more collagen in the skin when applied topically, and kiwi fruits have one of the highest vitamin C amounts of any fruit, along with vitamin E, also a benefit to the skin.

Instructions

    Gather your collagen facial ingredients. You'll need a very small mixing bowl, a mixing spoon, an avocado, and a kiwi fruit.

    Prepare the collagen facial. Slice off about a tablespoonful of avocado and remove the tough skin from this section, then drop the green, creamy piece of avocado into the bowl.     Apply the collagen facial mask. Apply to clean skin and leave on for a half hour. Some reports state that skin absorbs as much as it can of a substance within a half hour.

    Remove the collagen facial. Remove the bulk of the collagen facial with a damp cloth, then splash the face with warm water to remove the rest, and pat dry.

    Apply the collagen facial regularly. Tests show that topical treatments are cumulative and will boost skin collagen over time with regular use.

How to Perform a Facial Evaluation for Cosmetic Rejuvenation

Paradigms in cosmetic surgery are changing. Cosmetic rejuvenation is no longer just filling a wrinkle. The approach to the patient must take into account all the factors that led the patient's skin to its present condition, the patient's medical and surgical history, as well as the physical and psychological state of the patient. A thorough consultation and evaluation of the patient are necessary, plus a frank discussion of the patient's own cosmetic concerns and goals. Such an evaluation and discussion lead to greater patient satisfaction with cosmetic surgery procedures.

Patient Evaluation

    Seat the patient in a comfortable chair in a quiet, well-lit room, with the patient's feet resting comfortably on the floor.

    2

    Ask the patient about personal and family medical and surgical history, previous cosmetic procedures, present state of health, allergies and any prescribed or over-the-counter medications. Ask the patient about outcomes of and satisfaction or problems with previous cosmetic procedures.

    3

    Give the patient a hand-held mirror and ask her to tell you about her cosmetic concerns and goals.

    4

    Take note of the patient's general appearance, mood and behavior. Assess the patient's motivation for desiring a cosmetic procedure.

    5

    Ask about the patient's expectations of the outcome of cosmetic procedures. Evaluate how realistic and attainable her cosmetic goals are.

Physical Examination and Decision Making

    6

    Assess the patient's skin and overall condition, noting sun damage, laxity, wrinkling and any precancerous or cancerous skin growths.

    Ask the patient to make facial expressions, like raising her eyebrows, furrowing her brows, squeezing her eyes shut, smiling, frowning and turning down the lip corners to determine any asymmetry or weaknesses in musculature.

    Explain clearly to the patient what can be realistically achieved with the procedures you offer. Explain about potential benefits, risks and side effects of such treatments. Explain what limitations the patient may have before and after the procedure, such as sun exposure and daily activities. Ask the patient what impact an adverse effect of a cosmetic procedure would have on her.

    Decide if the patient is a suitable candidate for the cosmetic procedure, both physically and psychologically, then design a treatment plan and discuss it with the patient.

    Take pre-procedure photographs in full frontal, 45 degree and profile views. For the full frontal view, take photographs with the patient's face fully relaxed and using the muscles of facial expression -- raising the brows, furrowing brows, squeezing eyes shut, wrinkling the nose, smiling and frowning. Ask the patient to make each facial expression with maximal muscle contraction (as strongly as she can).

Estrogen Creams for Wrinkles

All skin is affected by aging, but some areas are more sensitive to these changes than others. The skin around the eyes typically shows more signs of aging than other places on the face. Two proteins, collagen and elastin, help keep skin firm. The aging process and sun exposure cause these to become weak and lessen skin elasticity. Some researchers propose that estrogen creams benefit the skin, while others claim they provide no benefit.

Pros

    The use of estrogen containing creams promotes smoother, younger looking skin. During and after menopause, loss of estrogen production causes skin thinning and loss of skin tone, leading to wrinkled skin. Aesthetic endocrinologists claim that estrogen cream slows and even reverses wrinkles. In addition to providing benefits to the skin, estrogen also helps prevent osteoporosis and symptoms related to menopause.

Cons

    University of Michigan researchers concluded in 2008 that estrogen creams do not help reduce wrinkles, especially wrinkles caused by the sun. While estrogen creams aid in helping skin produce more collagen that makes skin appear smoother, it only helps in skin that has been protected from the sun. Test subjects applied estrogen cream to the skin of the hips and forearms for 14 days. It was found that skin on the hips showed increased collagen production, but forearm skin showed no significant improvement.

Types of Estrogen

    Estrogen cream can be formulated with natural or synthetic estrogen. Manufactured natural estrogen products are derived from plants. These hormones are known as "bio-identicals" and have the exact structure as hormones produced in the body. Synthetic estrogen is formulated from chemicals that mimic estrogen produced in the body. Synthetic estrogen is widely prescribed for menopausal and post-menopausal women. It is stronger than naturally occurring estrogen and, when taken orally, can be more difficult than bio-identicals for the liver to break down. Both bio-identicals and synthetics can be taken orally to alleviate symptoms of menopause, and creams containing either type of estrogen may have the added benefit of reducing symptoms as well.

How to Tighten Your Face Muscles Yourself

According to the Today's Woman website, toning the 44 muscles in the face leads to lift, a brighter appearance and a more youthful look. There are a host of exercises you can do to tighten your facial muscles yourself, but you need to do them routinely for five to 10 minutes per day. Once the facial exercise routine becomes established and you've been performing them correctly for about three weeks, you may notice a marked difference in the appearance of your face.

Instructions

Forehead

    1

    Place your index fingers just above your eyebrows. Pull downward while using your forehead muscles to attempt to raise your eyebrows. Repeat 10 times.

    Lie on your back on your bed. Hang your head over the edge. Simultaneously open your eyes as far as you can and lift your eyebrows as far as possible. Relax and repeat five times.

    Frown as hard as you can while pulling your eyebrows closer together and downward toward your eyes. Open your eyes as wide as you can and lift your brows as high as they will go. Relax and repeat five times.

Eyes

    Close your eyes and keep them closed during this exercise. Lift your brows as high as you can make them go while pushing your eyelids down as hard as you can. Hold the position and count to five. Relax and repeat the exercise five times.

    Raise your lower eyelids while not allowing the upper eyelids to move. Repeat 10 times. The Today's Woman website indicates this can be a tough exercise to master. Keep trying until you get it.

    Look straight ahead. Look upward as far as possible, then downward as far as possible, while your head remains immobile. Relax by looking straight ahead. Repeat five times.

Lips

    Pucker your lips. Flex your mouth muscles to raise your lips as close to your nose as you can. Hold and count to five. Return your mouth to its relaxed position and repeat the exercise five times.

    Suck on one of your fingers as hard as you can. Remove your finger slowly. Repeat ten times.

    Smile as widely as possible while keeping your teeth and lips closed. Count to five. Relax and pucker your lips into a kiss position. Count to five, then relax. Repeat the entire exercise 10 times.

Cheeks

    Stretch your lips forward into the shape of an "O," then smile as widely as you can. Hold for one second and go back to the "O" shape. Repeat 10 times.

    Keep your lips and teeth closed and blow air up under your top lip until the area between your nose and upper lip bulges out. Count to 10. Move the air bubble to your left cheek and count to 10. Move the air bubble to your right cheek and count to 10. Relax and repeat five times.

    Smile a closed-lip, relaxed smile. Suck in your cheeks until they are touching your teeth. Hold and count to 10. Relax and repeat 10 times.

Chin and Neck

    Sit straight and tilt your head back until you see the ceiling. Allow your lips to relax, but keep them closed. Pretend you are chewing and make the chewing motion 20 times. Relax and return your head back to a normal position.

    Sit or stand, tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Pucker your lips and stretch them as if you are trying to kiss the ceiling. Hold the position and count to five. Relax and bring your head back down. Repeat five times.

    Sit upright and tilt your head back to look at the ceiling. Keep your lips relaxed and together. Bring your bottom lip up over your top lip as far as you can. Hold and count to five. Bring your head back down until you are looking straight ahead. Repeat exercise 10 times.
