    The first step to eliminating blotchy skin is determining the cause. The most common factor is sun damage, which causes brown and/or red discolorations. Certain medications can also cause splotchy pigment changes. Thin skin in some areas (which spread as we age) can allow tiny blood vessels to be apparent, which works against even coloring. Whether you have one or a combination of these factors, it's important to combat all elements working against your skin, and prevent ones that may affect you later.

    You'll need to customize your daily skin-care regimen to your skin's needs. Choose a gentle cleanser that works with your skin type to clean thoroughly without stripping moisture or damaging your skin. With so many thousands of products out there, you'll need to do some research and product-testing to find what's right for you.

    Once you've found the perfect cleanser, choose your moisturizer. As with choosing a cleanser, you'll need to find a moisturizer that works to balance your skin, fully hydrating, but not leaving any oily or greasy residue. Everyone's skin takes product differently, so these two steps are very important for you to take your time on and be sure you're using the right products.

    Prevent sun damage. No product can undo damage that's already done, so its extremely important to start protecting your skin from any future sun damage.     Now that you've got the skin-care basics taken care of, it's time to target your problem areas. You may choose to see a dermatologist to discuss your problems, but this is not always necessary.
