How to Find a Facial Laser Treatment

Originally, facials meant soothing treatments performed by aestheticians that used special products to clean and exfoliate the skin. Now, facials can be a variety of procedures including laser resurfacing, facial peels, photo facial treatments, and laser hair removal. There also are different types of lasers best suited for specific procedures performed by different professionals. These treatments do have side effects, which include peeling, blistering, scarring and discoloration, so know what treatment you want and who should perform it for best results.

Finding the Right Facial Laser Treatment

    1

List your goals. Do you want to remove redness from rosacea or fine wrinkles? Perhaps you have acne scars or birthmarks that you want to diminish. Finding the right facial laser treatment for you depends on what you want to accomplish with the procedure. For example, laser skin resurfacing is not for those with rosacea, according to the International Rosacea Foundation. Also, some laser treatments are more invasive and require more recovery time than others. While a photo facial is minimally invasive, a laser resurfacing procedure is an actual surgery.

    2

Determine your budget. Facial laser treatments can range from $300 to $5,000 based on the type of treatment. Each spa, salon or doctor will set different prices for the same procedures. Some laser facials can accomplish what you want in one or two treatments while others might need multiple procedures. Do not make finances your only determining factor, but they are an important consideration if you do not want any money surprises.

    3

Do your research. Research the professional you want to perform the procedure. Some procedures are best performed by plastic surgeons, aesthetic nurses or dermatologists. At a minimum, professionals need to be certified laser technicians. But a laser technician is not trained for laser skin resurfacing, for example. Care Fair recommends that you consult the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for surgeons in your geographic area who can complete laser treatments. Ask for referrals from friends who have had similar procedures. Call spas, dermatologists and plastic surgeons and ask for the types of laser procedures performed and associated credentials.

    4

Set up consultations. Meet with the professionals who might perform the procedure and ask questions about the actual process, potential side effects, qualifications and how many of this type of procedure they have performed. You need to feel comfortable with the person who will perform the laser facial and the environment where you will have it done. You may select several professionals and have multiple consultations.

    5

Select the place for your laser facial. Make your decision whether to have the procedure done after the consultations and after you've had plenty of time to think it over. Do not rush into the decision. Go back to your list of reasons for the laser facial and make sure that you have found the right type of procedure with the right professional. If you are still unsure, keep looking or ask for testimonials from other clients.
