Facelifts are plastic-surgery procedures for patients who desire results that exceed what other, less invasive cosmetic options, such as laser resurfacing and chemical peels, can offer. Facelift patients want a dramatically more youthful appearance, which is achieved by manipulating the skin and muscle tissue, and tightening the skin around the face. Advancements in plastic surgery technique and technology have yielded a wide variety of facelift options, but none of them guarantees that the results will be permanent.

Patients

Facelift patients vary in age and skin condition (especially with so many facelift options available as of 2009), but are generally upward of 40 years old, with visibly aged skin. The facial skin of a facelift patient usually exhibits extra sagging in the neck, jowl, chin and cheeks--a condition that cannot be solved by nonsurgical cosmetic procedures or treatments. Facelift patients also typically seek to rid the appearance of coarse wrinkles. "...Been hiding your age from the whole planet? But for how long will this go on? Or got given up wanting those tempting anti aging creams, unpleasant surgery and harmful chemicals? Do Not Worry, dear. Here is a natural therapy to look and get younger, healthier and sexier than you are. So here it is for you Anti-aging Foods..". The desired results of patients vary, as do the skin conditions, but the ultimate motive is an extreme improvement in how youthful the face appears.

Functions

Plastic surgeons have two basic objectives when performing a facelift procedure. The first is to tighten the skin tissue. Incisions are made so that the skin tissue, and often the muscle tissue underneath, can be moved. The skin tissue is pulled and tightened, and in traditional facelifts, the excess skin is cut off from where the new "seam line" is made (though newer facelift techniques don't involve the rather traumatic step of pulling the skin and then cutting off the excess).
A facelift cannot just work from side to side for pleasing aesthetic results, which brings up the second function of a facelift. The skin must be lifted upward. Different techniques involve different methods for the "lifting" portion of the procedure. Sometimes the muscle tissue beneath is pushed upward, such as in the cheeks; sometimes self-anchored surgical threads are used to lift the skin. The tightening and lifting of the skin should eliminate coarse wrinkles as well as visible skin sagging.

Variations

Different types of patients have stemmed from people's different conditions and desires. Facelift techniques have been tailored to address patient needs and to be most effective from the surgical standpoint. The techniques vary by their degree of invasiveness, meaning the quantity and size of the incisions made during surgery. These variations also determine the amount of scarring, side effects and recovery time the patient experiences after surgery.
The types of incisions and precision technology used, such as endoscopic technology, which involves the insertion of tiny cameras into the skin tissue, also make for different procedures and facelift results. So, too, does the treated facial area, and the depth and thickness of the treated tissue layers vary by applied technique and results.

Lasting Results

A facelift can, for appearance's sake, turn back the clock a number of years. Facelift results generally last from five to 15 years, depending on the procedure and skin condition. Traditional facelifts will last for 10 to 15 years. Less invasive and aggressive procedures, such as the mini-facelift and the feather lift, will last for a maximum of five years. Yet facelift procedures are not a permanent solution to aging facial skin. The "new" face will age just as the original face did, since thinning and weakening skin and the effects of gravity are inevitable with time.

Considerations

There are factors aside from the type of facelift performed and age of the patient that can influence how long a facelift lasts. Alcohol and tobacco use still affect the skin after a facelift, and can take years of the facelift's lifespan. Sun exposure is another environmental factor that affects the appearance of the skin and can speed up the aging process even after a successful facelift. Also, genetics are unavoidable and unchangeable, and play a role in the lasting effects of a facelift.
