In our never-ending pursuit to hold on to youth, some people have turned to using electrical current to treat aging. That is precisely what a galvanic facial treatment is. Recently, galvanic facial treatments have been finding their way out of the hands of aestheticians and into the hands of consumers. Your first question might be, Do they work, and if so, how?

History of Galvanic

The use of electrical current is named after Italian physician and physicist Luigi Galvani. The first practical use was as a form of electrolysis or hair removal in the late 1800s. Since then, its primary use has been as a noninvasive means for topical penetration of medications for therapeutic purposes. Low-level galvanic current has been used in skin-care protocols by professionals for the past 50 years.

How It Works

Galvanic uses two polarities---positive and negative current. Most apparatus have a separate electrode for each. One electrode is held by the person receiving the treatment, while the other is maneuvered around the skin by the technician administering the treatment. This creates a simple circuit.
The current, depending on the polarity and the acidity or alkalinity of the product, causes a chemical reaction when the electrode is applied.

Product Usage

Disincrustation is one of the most commonly known treatments utilizing galvanic. "...Been hiding your age from the whole world? But for how many years will this continue? Or got fed up trying those seducing anti aging creams, uncomfortable surgery and hazardous chemicals? Do Not Worry, dear. Right here is a natural remedy to look and get younger, healthier and sexier than you are. So here it is for you Anti-aging Foods..". This treatment is accomplished by application of an alkaline solution that is penetrated using the negative polarity. The product is pushed into the skin causing sebum to "melt." This is a treatment commonly used on a person who has acneic skin or a buildup of oils causing blackheads to clog the pores.
Products used in conjunction with galvanic typically follow specific protocols outlined by product manufacturers. The key benefit of incorporating galvanic is increased penetration of a product to enhance performance of the active ingredients. Many trained professionals and few consumers have the knowledge of cosmetic chemistry to make these kinds of determinations.
There are, however, direct benefits derived from the use of galvanic current alone.
    Negative current:
    Stimulate nerves
    Increases blood supply
    Softens tissues
    Positive current:
    Soothes nerves
    Decreases blood supply
    Hardens tissues
The positive current is the one usually used in the final treatment stage to decrease redness, help sooth inflammation following extractions and penetrate treatment products into the skin.
A residual affect resulting from the nerve contraction is a "lifted" appearance, an additional benefit of galvanic treatment.

Galvanic Home Spa

One example of a device designed for home use is the NuSkin Galvanic Spa System. It uses a proprietary gel in step 1 to penetrate and purify the skin following cleansing. The system uses the negative setting on the device in conjunction with the purifying gel, which also has a negative charge. Using two negative charges act like two negative poles of a magnet repelling each other and forcing the product deeper into the epidermis. The unit is then switched to the positive setting and used with a gel containing anti-aging ingredients to help firm the skin.
The unit adjusts automatically to the conductivity of the user's skin and has a setting for proper treatment timing. Because of its ease of use and cost effectiveness compared to professional treatments, the NuSkin Galvanic Spa System and other home systems like it are gaining popularity with consumers.
Galvanic treatment when used as part of an ongoing home-care program can contribute to healthier, more youthful appearing skin.

Contraindications

There are certain conditions where use of galvanic treatment is not recommended. It is not advisable for pregnant or nursing women. It is not advisable for use for anyone with a pacemaker or metal implant. Those with couperose or rosacea should avoid use of galvanic in affected areas. This is not meant as a specific endorsement of a product or treatment program. For best results, the use of any home-care product or device should be done under the advisement of a skin-care professional.
