How Can I Look 10 Years Younger at 40?

You've just celebrated your 40th birthday, and now you're worried about looking younger. You would actually like to look 10 years younger -- the way you did at 30. It's not that hard. A few simple skin care, make-up and fashion tips will have you on your way.

Keep your weight in check. An extra 10 or 20 pounds can add years. Do your best to eat healthy foods and to exercise. Not only will you be able to maintain your weight, but you will have the energy of a much younger person.

Get a prescription-strength Vitamin A product from your dermatologist, such as Retin A, Renova or Tazorac. Use it on your skin as directed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and to fade age spots. These prescription products really work and will have you looking 10 years younger in a period of weeks. Use a moisturizer with sunscreen during the day to prevent further wrinkles and sun damage.

Get a youthful haircut. Ask your hairstylist for a shoulder-skimming style with layers that frame your face. Have your hair colored and highlighted in a way that brings out your eyes and flatters your skin tone. Maintain your cut and color by going in for trims and touch-ups every 6-8 weeks.

Emphasize your eyes. Use a light-colored eye shadow to open up your eyes and make them look bigger. Avoid shiny or glittery eye shadows. Curl your eyelashes and apply black or brown mascara. Stay away from trendy colored mascaras like blue or green because they just look fake. Avoid heavy eyeliner because it makes the eye look closed and tired.

Use a dewy foundation in a color that matches your skin tone. Don't use matte make-up, especially in foundations or lipsticks. The dry, flat finish settles into wrinkles. Use a cream blush in a light color on the apples of your checks. Don't apply on the checkbones, as this will only emphasize the hollows of your checks and make you look older. Finish off with a translucent loose powder, applied sparingly with a brush. Apply a moisturizing lipstick or a lip gloss in a natural color. Your make-up has a big effect on whether you look 40 or 10 years younger.

Wear figure-flattering clothing. Shirts that are too big or blousy will make you look mannish and old. Trousers that are too big in the butt will make you look older than you are. Buy attractive shoes. Don't fall into the trap of wearing worn-in, comfortable shoes. Shoes that are too wide or have holes cut out for your bunions will make you look 70, not 30. There are many stylish, comfortable options in stores now.

Get at least 7 hours of sleep at night. There is no better way to look younger than to get a good night's rest. It will leave you with glowing skin, wide-awake eyes and the energy of a 20-year-old.
