Facial exercises can be a wise addition to an anti-aging regimen. Through toning and strengthening the underlying muscles of the face, promoters of facial exercise claim that a more youthful complexion might be achieved. However, facial lifting exercises must be practiced for a few months before significant results are noticed.

Lifting Cheeks

    According to Carole Maggio, author of "Facercise," 10 minutes of facial exercise a day can take 10 years off your face. Maggio suggests the following exercise to lift cheeks and add definition to the cheekbones. Begin by opening the mouth into a tall, oval shape. Look upward, and squint the eyes. Force a smile with the lower lip only and allow the cheeks to rise. Try to push the smile under the cheeks and hold for a count of 10.

Lifting Eyes

    To help lift the eyebrows and reduce frown lines, begin by naturally raising the eyebrows. Provide muscle resistance by placing the index fingers above the eyebrows and pressing down while using the muscles underneath the eyebrow to raise the eyebrows upward.

    To remedy bagginess underneath the eyes and lift drooping eyelids, Thomas V. Hagerty of "Shape Your Face" suggests the following exercise. Begin by splashing the face with cold water and applying a light moisturizer or facial oil.

Use the fingers to press the skin back slightly so that the sides of the eyes are being pushed back toward the hairline. While continuing to do this, close the eyes tightly. The muscle contraction can be felt strongly after holding the eyes shut for a few seconds. Doing three sets of 20 reps is recommended.

    To strengthen the lower eyelid and reduce puffiness under the eyes, Maggio recommends her lower eyelid strengthening exercise. Gently place the index fingers in the corners of the eyes. Look up at the ceiling. Squint the eyes and repeat as desired.

Lifting the Corners of the Mouth

    After washing your hands, begin by inserting the index fingers at the corners of the mouth. Contract the muscles around the index fingers. Hold this resistance for a few seconds. When repeating this exercise, the idea is to try to use this muscle around the mouth to push the fingers closer together. Try performing two sets with 25 repetitions each after this exercise becomes easier to do.

    To help smooth out lines above the upper lip and make the lips appear fuller, Maggio suggests her lip shaper exercise. Simply press the lips together and use the index finger to tap them in the center. Repeat as desired.
