What Is a Fitzpatrick of 3 in ActiveFX?

The Fitzpatrick Scale is used to classify skin types according to their resistance to damage caused by sunlight. The laser light used in an ActiveFX treatment affects the skin in a manner similar to sunlight. Practitioners use the Fitzpatrick classification of patients to predict how effective the treatment will be, or if it can even be used at all.

The Fitzpatrick Scale was developed in 1975 at Harvard Medical School. It is a way to classify skin into six different types based on complexion and reaction to exposure to sunlight. Individuals classified as Fitzpatrick 1 have very fair skin and always get sunburn instead of a tan. Those with a Fitzpatrick rating of 6 have dark skin and hair and never burn. Fitzpatrick classification is based on the observation of the patient and the patient's self-reported ability to tan. A person with a Fitzpatrick rating of 3 has a white-to-cream-colored complexion and any eye or hair color, tans gradually and sunburns occasionally.

ActiveFX is a laser treatment with a short recuperation time. It is used to improve skin tone and texture. The laser light is used to vaporize a thin layer of skin, bringing new skin cells to the surface. ActiveFX is usually done once, but some patients have the procedure repeated annually. Some patients feel a burning, comparable to a sunburn, either during or after the treatment.

Patients with Fitzpatrick ratings of 4 to 6 are more prone to postprocedure skin pigmentation changes. It is recommended that patients with darker skin have a small test treatment on an inconspicuous patch of skin a few weeks before the treatment in order to know what the long-term results will look like.

ActiveFX is a medical procedure that removes a thin layer of the skin. There are risks associated with any medical procedure.
