Found naturally in saltwater lakes in Central and South America and Africa, blue green algae are commonly referred to as spirulina. Writings from Spanish conquistadors indicate that the Aztec people used blue green algae for sustenance. The Kanembu people of Central Africa also harvested blue green algae from Lake Chad. Today people use blue green algae as a dietary supplement because of its nutrient rich composition.
Profile
The two most common species of blue green algae used for dietary supplements and human consumption are Spirulina maxima and Spirulina plantensis. Blue green algae contain zinc, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, B vitamins, beta carotene and other carotenoids. However, there is some dispute as to whether the B-12 contained in blue green algae is accessible by the human body. Blue green algae contain omega-6 fatty acids, like most marine life forms. The algae may also have a high amount of mercury, though there are conflicting studies regarding this point.
Possible Uses
Because blue green algae are high in antioxidants, substituting a serving of fruits and vegetables with a supplement of blue green algae is useful. According to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center website, blue green algae have antiviral and antimutagenic properties, and blue green algae are effective inhibiting the replication of influenza, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex 1. Daily use of blue green algae in children living around Chernobyl caused improved immune function. Blue green algae have been used in scientific studies on animals to lower cholesterol levels, treat oral cancer and stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines. In addition, blue green algae may reduce fatigue due to its protein and vitamin concentrations.
Considerations
Although blue green algae has been studied extensively in animals, very few reliable studies on humans exist. As a result, there is no scientific basis for using blue green algae therapeutically. According to the NYU Langone Medical Center, there is no proven dosing information for therapeutic use of blue green algae. Both the NYU website and the Sloan-Kettering website indicate that no extensive clinical data on humans support the use of blue green algae for any purpose other than general dietary supplementation.
Mercury in the water will contaminate algae harvested from that water. In addition, other strains of toxic algae may contaminate blue green algae. Contaminated algae can cause liver damage, kidney damage and neurological damage. When using blue green algae supplements be sure they are certified contaminant-free.
There is no scientific support for blue green algae as a weight-loss product. Due to the potential content in blue green algae of phenylalanine, those who cannot tolerate it should not use spirulina.
