What Makes Skin Get Thin & Very Old Looking?

The global market for antiaging products and services is expected to be worth $274.5 billion by 2013, according to BCC Research. This reflects our preoccupation with defying the visible signs of aging such as lines, wrinkles, thinning skin and age spots. The causes of skin aging can be grouped into two categories: intrinsic (internal) aging, which occurs as we grow older, and extrinsic (external) aging, which results from environmental factors.

Intrinsic Aging

    As we grow older, collagen--the protein in skin responsible for keeping it plump and firm--starts to break down and the production of new collagen slows. Skin gradually loses its ability to snap back into place as the quantity and quality of another protein, elastin, diminishes. Meanwhile, dead skin cells are shed less quickly and replaced by fewer new cells, according to AgingSkinNet. This process begins in our mid-20s but the resulting visible signs--including lines and wrinkles, crepe-textured skin, dry, skin and a noticeable lack of firmness--are not usually seen for another two decades.

Sun Exposure

    Most premature skin aging is caused by sun exposure, a form of aging referred to as photoaging. When skin is exposed to sunlight, harmful UV radiation is absorbed, causing oxidative damage to skin cells, according to a 2003 report in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Smoking

    Studies have shown a strong link between tobacco smoking and premature skin aging, according to a 2009 report in the "Journal of Investigative Dermatology." While signs of premature aging are visible under a microscope in smokers as young as 20, it is possible to diminish these signs by giving up smoking, according to AgingSkinNet.

Facial Creases

    As skin ages and loses its elasticity, creases caused by such facial expressions as squinting, frowning or smiling become permanent. Botox injections can banish these expression lines by relaxing the small muscles in the face and help prevent new ones from forming. Sleeping with your face in the same position on the pillow each night eventually results in permanent "sleep lines," according to a 2004 report published in the "Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery."

Gravity

    Throughout our lives, our bodies are subjected to the pull of gravity. This has no constant visible consequences for youthful skin, which springs back into place of its own accord. However, the effects of gravity's pull become more evident as skin loses its elasticity with age. In our 50s, the visible effects may include a thinning top lip and more pronounced lower lip, elongated ears, heavier eyelids and a drooping of the tip of the nose, according to AgingSkinNet.
