Alternative to Juvederm

Juvederm is a collagen-based gel that is injected into the face, especially around the nose and mouth. The gel is used to smooth wrinkles and lines that appear around the face during the aging process. While Juvederm is approved for usage by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), there are a number of alternative procedures that produce the same results, such as Restylane, Botox, and Zyderm and Zyplast.

According to the Restylane website, the injected gel is made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a chemical compound found in the skin that creates a youthful look by providing the skin with elasticity and smoothness. For those looking to ease the wrinkles around the nose and mouth, Restylane injections are reported to provide younger looking skin for six to eighteen months. After the procedure, your doctor will inform you to not touch the injection site for six hours. You can use a cloth submerged in cold water and then wring out to lessen the swelling and potential bruising at the injection site. You should also avoid taking any blood thinning medications as that can contribute to bruising and bleeding at the injection site, and can complicate the healing process. You should also avoid sunbathing or suntanning for the six initial hours after the procedure. Your doctor will also encourage you to schedule a follow up appointment about four months after the procedure. This way once your skin has healed and the effects of the Restylane are noticeable, your doctor will examine your skin and face to make sure that there are no complications and determine if you should receive another treatment in the next few months. As reported on the Restylane website, many people don't need another treatment for a year or more after their first injection.

Perhaps the most popular injected compound to reduce wrinkles and lines along the brow and forehead, Botox has received much attention in the media. The compound is made of the bacteria scientifically known as "Clostridium botulinum", the bacteria that can also cause the disease botulism. In controlled conditions and with the specific chemical compounds used in cosmetic surgery, Botox eases lines and wrinkles by weakening the muscles that cause wrinkles and frown lines on the forehead. According to the website BotoxCosmetic.com, the entire procedure takes around ten to fifteen minutes and requires little time to heal. To make sure that you can safely receive the treatment, you should make sure your doctor does a thorough examination of your face and facial muscles, as some people can have severe reactions to the bacteria. The effects of Botox can last up to four months, so you would also want to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to arrange the date and time for your next procedure.

Every surgical procedure carries some risks. The risks of non-surgically injecting materials into the skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles carries a number of risks as well. Allergic reactions, improper injection techniques, too much or too little compounds used, and healing difficulties are all things to consider before using Juvederm or any alternative to the procedure.

For example, if you have severe allergic reactions to certain bacteria, you should avoid using Restylane or Botox. If you have any bleeding conditions that reduce your blood's ability to clot, you should not use either procedure as well. Before going to receive the procedure, you should also make sure that you don't have any acne, welts, cuts, sores, or any other markings on your face near the injection site. These can cause additional complications which can damage your skin after the procedure.
