Makeup Suggestions for Your 50s

An old saying asserts that women, like fine wine, get better with age. Though many women in their 50s have developed the self-confidence that comes with maturity, they also develop the drier skin, deeper lines and thinning lips that naturally occur with age. Many older women maintain lifestyles as active as those of women 20 years their junior, and they want to match their appearance to this youthful energy level. It's easy to keep your face looking fresh past 50 when armed with the right tools and knowledge.

    Some women in their 50s encounter age spots or acne, and most deal with wrinkles. Wrinkles are caused by sun damage, repetitive facial expressions and dry skin due to the bodys decreasing estrogen level. Older women should moisturize their faces daily, which also prepares the skin for a smooth application of foundation. Use a light layer of moisturizing liquid foundation; dry powder foundation tends to settle into fine lines and exaggerate them. Carefully color match your foundation to your skin tone and avoid going too light or dark, which leads to a mask-like appearance. Blend carefully to steer clear of the line of demarcation that often occurs around the jawline and ears. Concealer is effective for covering dark circles that become more prevalent with age, but avoid applying it too heavily, because it can dry the delicate under-eye skin. Use a smoothing primer before applying foundation and concealer to smooth small lines and fill in deeper wrinkles.

    Lips naturally lose fullness over time, so the last thing a woman over 50 should do is shrink her pout further with a dark lipstick. Avoid deep hues like claret, plum and cranberry. Instead, select neutral colors like pink or peach or brighter shades like fuchsia or coral to give the illusion of a fuller lip. Avoid matte lipstick formulations, which are often drying, and instead pick creamy lipsticks or glosses. Lip liner is imperative for older women if you have fine lines around your mouth. Apply a lip liner before lipstick to prevent lipstick bleed, in which color seeps into the fine lines.

    As women age, fat gains a stronghold in all areas of the body except the face. The fat pads that once gave your face a plump, youthful look disappear, replaced with sunken cheeks that lend a haggard appearance. A swipe of vibrant blush on the apples of the cheeks can take years off your face. Use a moisturizing cream blush in shades of pink, coral and peach to brighten your face and add a healthy glow. Apply blush in a circular sweeping motion to prevent a severe line of color, and avoid blending blush so high up the cheekbones that it settles into eye wrinkles.

    Perk up tired eyes by wearing eye shadow in soft, muted shades of plum, gray and brown. Toss too-bright, shimmery and glittery eye shadows, which accentuate the lines that many women above 50 have developed. Select powder shadows; cream eye shadows tend to melt into your eye creases a few hours after you apply them. Choose soft eyeliners in flattering colors like heather gray, brown, plum or navy, and avoid the harsh look that black produces. Always curl your eyelashes to produce an opened-up, brighter-eyed look. Eyebrows naturally thin with age, so fill in sparse brows with a powder or soft brow pencil one shade lighter than your natural color.
