Although dark circles are commonly associated with fatigue, they have more to do with genetics and hereditary. According to the New York Times, the two most likely causes of dark circles are hyper pigmentation due the melanin's overreaction to the sun and dilated blood vessels. Solutions for this beauty dilemma range from Retin A-infused topical creams to caustic cosmetic surgery procedures.
Topical Cream
Topical creams are a common treatment to help erase dark circles under the eyes. These prescription beauty products usually contain "Tretinoin," also known as "Retin-A," a chemical that is derived from vitamin A. The cream works by helping the skin to renew itself, increasing the turnover of cells. Other eye creams can contain skin-stimulating agents, such as green tea, caffeine, soy, peptides and alpha-hydroxy acids.
Natural Remedies
The Prevention Health's book "Natural Remedies: Nondrug Healing Strategies that Work Best" recommends the use of chilled tea bags to reduce under eye darkness. Chamomile or green tea bags are first saturated in hot water, then cooled in the refrigerator and applied to the eyes. Another natural remedy suggested in the book is cotton balls soaked with witch hazel. Both treatments require direct application to the closed eyelid for at least 20 minutes.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that can be used to treat under eye darkness. The depth of the peel depends on the skin color, texture and sensitivity, thus doctors usually do an in-depth analysis of the face's skin before suggesting the level of treatment. The three levels of chemical peels are surface (or superficial), medium and deep. Acids used range from the milder alpha-hydroxy (derived from natural fruit acids) to the more caustic phenol mixture, which could require the use of anesthesia or IV sedation.
Laser Treatments
Two types of laser treatments can be used to decrease dark circles: laser resurfacing and photo facials. Laser resurfacing requires either a carbon dioxide or erbium narrow laser to remove the outer layer of skin. The carbon dioxide laser allows for deeper penetration, thus providing better results for deep set pigmentation. The down side of this laser treatment is can damage the surface of the skin, and have a longer recovery time.
Photo facials are a less harsh treatment that uses the intense light pulse system (IPL). The broad laser emits intense pulses of light to a localized area. The light has the ability to penetrate the skin, without damaging the skin's outer layer. As a result, the laser can targets the broken capillaries, restrict blood to the area, and help form new collagen. Tuscon Citizen.com states that this treatment has gained popularity because of its quick healing time --- patients can have the treatment for lunch, apply makeup and return to work the same day.
