The Ingredients in Perricone MD High Potency Evening Repair

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, the research dermatologist who pioneered the inflammation theory of aging, has created a line of skin care products that includes his night cream, Perricone MD High Potency Evening Repair. Retailing at $95 for a 2 oz. bottle, it has three main active ingredients; alpha-lipoic acid, DMAE and retinol.

Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that protects against cell deterioration. In his online blog, Perricone says that the High Potency Evening Repair works during sleep to "impart long-lasting anti-aging benefits." His patented high-concentrate alpha lipoic acid formula, he says, will reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin's texture. There have been studies, including one conducted in 2003 in Stockholm, that indicates alpha-lipoic acid improves the condition of aging skin.

Perricone holds U.S. and international patents related to his research on the theory that cellular inflammation is the cause of many diseases and degrades the skin's health. He writes that his patented dimethylaminoethanol or DMAE formula in the cream will improve elasticity and tighten skin. DMAE is a naturally occurring organic compound. A 2007 report published by "The British Journal of Dermatology" raised concerns that the substance could be damaging to human skin cells.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative found to increase cell rejuvenation and collagen production. Its effects are milder than its harsh counterpart, tretinoin, which can cause skin irritation for many users, according to the Cleveland Clinic Dermatology Department. High Potency Evening Repair contains the highest level of retinol available over-the-counter, Perricone writes, adding that it is non-irritating and regulates collagen synthesis. He cautions that it can cause photosensitivity, and sunscreen should be applied diligently during the day.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration defines active ingredients as those that provide a pharmacological effect on the human body. The inactive ingredients in Perricone MD High Potency Evening Repair cream are: water, isododecane, caprilyc/capric triglycerides, cyclopentasiloxane, l-tyrosine, cyclohexasiloxane, polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, cetyl peg/ppg-10/1 dimethicone, hexyl laurate, sodium chloride, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, hydroxyethylcellulose, elaeis guineensis (palm) Oil, polysorbate 20, tocotrienols, pyridoxine hci, pantethine, zinc sulfate, urea, rhodiola rosea root extract, tocopherol, sorbic acid, parfum (fragrance), benzyl benzoate, sodium hyaluronate.
