Introduction

How Exercise Firms the Face Muscles

    The face moves because of the underlying muscles. The skin is attached to the muscles, and this makes it possible for facial expressions such as smiling, raising an eyebrow, frowning or winking. The skin and muscles of the face are closely connected. Underneath the surface of the skin is subcutaneous tissue that is responsible for the elasticity. As the facial muscles are contracted and relaxed, the muscles and tissue fibers increase in volume, similar to body building, increasing the size of muscles. With stronger and tighter facial muscles, the underlying tissue is also strengthened, and this affects the skin by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and loose skin. Why Do Facial Exercises

    Face exercises are a natural and inexpensive way to gain a more youthful appearance. Exercising the body is known to help tone up the muscles, to make them larger, stronger and more defined. These muscles are not constantly in use, so they lose some of their suppleness and elasticity. The idea is to choose the areas of the face that you feel need the most work. Do each exercise until the muscles get tired for maximum benefit. Exercise also brings oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the face, and these are important for the function and maintenance of skin cells.

Studies and Research

    In a study conducted by Gary L. Grove, PhD, at the Skin Study Center, a research facility in Pennsylvania, after 3 months of twice-daily facial exercises, the participants showed "highly significant differences." The participants felt their faces were more firm and more elastic. The facial muscles were also stronger "as measured by the time they could hold a high resistance load."
