Fraxel lasers are used to treat a variety of skin disorders, signs of aging, scars and uneven skin tone. The lasers target microscopic areas of skin rather than the whole surface. Fraxel offers three lasers for different levels of severity--re:fine, re:pair and re:store. The procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with recovery time ranging from a few hours to a week.
Technology
Fraxel's re:fine and re:store non-ablative lasers work by sending pulses of energy to the layers of skin under the epidermis in tiny columns. By targeting small areas, more tissue remains intact, and the healthy tissue surrounding the treated area stimulates collagen production and promotes faster healing. The re:pair laser does work on the top layer of skin but also targets small areas, rather than the whole surface like most ablative lasers.
Skin Conditions
Fraxel's lasers are used to treat wrinkles of varying severity, acne and surgical scarring, melasma, uneven skin tone, brown spots and other types of sun damage and pigmentation irregularities.
Results
Fraxel's re:fine laser is recommended only for the mildest fine lines and pigmentation problems such as melasma.
Reviews of re:store, Fraxel's signature laser for treating moderate problems, and re:pair, for the most severe issues, have been mixed. Some people have experienced tremendous success with both lasers, while others claim to see no difference after having spent up to $5,000 on the procedures.
Re:fine and re:store require multiple sessions, while re:pair produces results in one treatment.
Risks
Even with the use of numbing creams and pain medications, some patients find re:store and re:pair quite painful, at least during the procedure itself. Downtime
Although healing time varies from patient to patient, the less-invasive nature of Fraxel's lasers allows those treated with re:fine to return to normal activity the same day. Re:store patients can expect to remain at home for one to seven days, depending on the intensity of the wavelength the technician or doctor uses. Those who have undergone the re:pair procedure can expect five to seven days of downtime.
