Risks of Retinol

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, used in a number of skin care products as both an acne-fighting and anti-aging tool. Derived from animal products, it is a popular tool of beauty for women all over the world, used in everything from creams and lotions to dietary supplements. It has been used for more than 20 years with benefits like cancer reduction, and very few side effects, but all consumers should be aware of any potential risks, no matter how small.

Vitamin A Toxicity

While the body needs Vitamin A to function, there are limits to how much can be processed and used effectively. Flu-like symptoms and rash are the first sign of Vitamin A toxicity, though reactions will differ. In topical retinol usage, the skin may begin to peel, indicating the need to reduce the frequency of application.

In higher concentrations, over-consumption of retinol has also been shown to contribute to bone fractures. The elderly are most prone to these breaks, especially in the hip and pelvic area.

Birth Defects

A number of retinol products are of concern to expectant mothers, including Retin-A (tretinoin) and Accutane (isotretinoin). While studies correlating Retin-A to birth defects have thus far been inconclusive, Accutane is directly linked with mental retardation, cleft palate, and heart abnormalities. These complications are extremely rare, but obstetricians recommend that women who are pregnant, or wish to get pregnant, avoid these products altogether.

Photosensitivity

Topical retinol products cause an immediate sensitivity to sunlight, and sunscreen should always be worn while retinol products are being used. "...Been hiding your age from the whole entire world? But for how many years will this continue? Or got fed up hoping those seducing anti aging creams, hurtful surgery and harmful chemicals? Do Not Worry, dear. Here is a natural treatment to look and get younger, healthier and sexier than you are. So here it is for you Anti-aging Foods..". While Vitamin A helps protect against the sun's harmful UV rays, retinol also works to strip away the dead, top layer of skin, leaving the face more exposed. Retinol users may suntan or burn more easily, but regular use of sunscreen will combat this.
